The Academic program for each student is highly individualized, implemented by certified Special Education teachers, and assisted by teaching assistants. Academic programs are driven by ongoing assessment incorporating the interests of students. The core academic program at Saint Catherine Academy consists of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Individualized annual goals and objectives are based on the Diocese of Bridgeport curriculum frameworks and developed based on student need and current functioning.
The goal of the academic program is to develop maximum potential in each area utilizing a combination of individual instruction and small group sessions. This allows the teacher to effectively assess progress and plan necessary accommodations for each student. There is an emphasis on developing and maintaining language arts skills and math proficiency.
Assistive technology is utilized in the classroom setting to support and develop academic skills. Functional application of academic skills is further developed in interdisciplinary classes such as culinary skills, independent living and in the vocational skills program.
