Curriculum
With a low student to staff ratio,
our students receive instruction that is age appropriate and functional.
Students are ecologically
assessed with consideration given
to their personal environments in the planning and implementation
of a program of study. Our curriculum encompasses Core
Academics in math, social studies, science and language arts
built on the Connecticut Framework “K-12 Curriculum Goals
and Standards.” A priority focus of the curriculum is interpersonal
competence, development of daily living, recreational, and leisure
skills and rich vocational experience.
Through authentic and task analytic assessments,
we ensure each student’s progress. Ongoing assessments include:
• Portfolios and real world problems
• Work samples and criterion-referenced tests
The academic areas are integrated
with art, music, physical education and religion/character education.
Daily Living Skills include:
• Personal Care and Productivity
• Community Use and Integration
• Interpersonal Effectiveness
• Time and Life Management
Occupational
therapy, physical therapy
and speech therapy are
integrated into the classroom activities and meet the requirements
of student’s individualized educational plan (IEP).
The expected outcomes for each
student are the highest possible expectations for success and
are developed on an individual basis. When assessing the progress
of a student, staff considers the next expected environment. For
instance, vocational instruction begins with training and moves
from in-school activities through functional application to community
experiences.
Young adults at St. Catherine
Academy experience a vocational
curriculum. It combines a core academic program with functional
application and skill development. We teach the day-to-day skills
through an individualized program needed for independent living.
Students learn in an environment that provides positive reinforcement,
immediate feedback and clarification, and guided practice. In
addition, students learn to advocate for themselves in preparation
for living and working in the adult world. Vocational curriculum
continues from age 18-21 with an emphasis on transition to adult
living and services.
Students succeed at St. Catherine
Academy because of our small, individualized program in a nurturing
yet challenging environment that recognizes the capabilities of
each student and focuses on academic, life and vocational skills.
The ultimate goal for each student is to achieve the highest level
of personal independence.
